Planned Giving in 2018 and Beyond: Income Tax Changes Set the Stage for a Different Conversation about Philanthropy

Date: Wednesday, June 6, 2018
Time: 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Location: University Club
Speaker: Michelle McKinnon, McGuire Woods LLP

This program will cover the manner in which donors and their advisors should approach planned giving under new tax laws as well as changes affecting the charitable deduction and their impact on planned giving techniques.  It will also explore other reasons donors make gifts and whether these considerations are likely to outweigh new tax limitations in a donor’s gift considerations.

Michele McKinnon serves as the chair of the nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations industry team for Viginia-based  McGuire and Woods. With more than 25 years of experience, Michele routinely represents many public charities, major colleges and universities, supporting organizations, large private foundations, and charitable trusts on a variety of federal tax and governance matters. Named a "Divorce, Trusts and Estates Trailblazer," The National Law Journal, 2017, she is also a frequent speaker at national conferences.

Michele is a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and served as the immediate past Virginia State Chair of the organization. She also currently sits on its Charitable Planning & Exempt Organizations Committee. She is also a member of the Fiduciary Income Tax Committee of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association. She is a former chair of the Trusts and Estates Section of the Virginia State Bar.
